What string brand and gauge has everyone been most happy with overall? I have been going back and forth on the Ric 10-46's and D'Addario EXL150's. Also, the Schaller's sure are sloppy!

My favorite ones are the T-I Custom Flat Wound set. They sound great, feel great, and seem to last forever.

Same here, TI Jazz Flats on both my 370/12 and 340/12. I doubt I'll ever use anything else on them again - and at the rate they're going (three years plus on the guitar I play the most) I may not need to think about it for quite a while.

Another vote for TI Flats here. They have low tension, last a while and are quite bright for flatwounds. They don't add that extra stress on the neck that other types of flats seem to do. I don't use anything else on my 12-string.

I guess what Todd said in an earlier post rings true (as it were). Flatwound strings dull the sound of the low course and accentuate the sound of the octave. The result is more chime and a more authentic sixties vibe. As for longevity, TI's last longer than any string set I've used on any of my guitars. Which is enough to make the $40 a set price tag look like a real bargain.

TI Flatwounds 10-44. Expensive! I will have to give them a try. Thanks for the unanimous recommendation.

Since my 330/12 came with Schaller Mini M6 machines, any suggestion on a more accurate replacement that would not involve drilling? Maybe I just got a lame set.

Make sure you clean the tuners, install the strings so there are only a few neat wraps around the post from top to bottom, without kinking, binding or overlapping, and always tune up from flat to pitch so even tension is maintained.

Do the TI ones pair well with the hi-gains, too?

I use sets of singles based on the gauges of the light Dean Markley electric set:

2581 LT .009/.009 .011/.011 .016/.008 .024/.010 .032/.016p .042/.022

I will change the low G from a 16 to a 17 or 18.

I buy GHS flats or D'Addario Chromes for the wound strings and D'Addarios for the plains. I also prefer a plain on the octave E (or string 11 counting from high to low).

I play .010s on my six strings and find that gauge in a 12 set too heavy.
