Does the Sept 1, 1984 truss rod rule apply the C Series?

I (luckily) have never had to perform truss rod surgery on a Rickenbacker, so I was wondering if anyone out there could tell me whether the C Series is so accurate that Rickenbacker decided to use the old style truss rod.
The Rickenbacker manual famously explains that instruments made prior to September 1, 1984 must have their truss rods adjusted manually, i.e. nuts loosened, neck held in position, and then nuts tightened.
Is this necessary on the C Series or is it safe to adjust the truss rod nuts under tension (instrument in tune)? I'd like to combine my laziness with my desire to keep my fingerboard attached.
