Did anyone spot this for sale?

http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=619

Was there an asking price?

It's listed in the register as a 4001S.

A 64 with a skunk stripe?

If it is the case, that would be a very rare beast.

That's what I thought - looks a bit odd

Lots of questionable things going on there.

For one, didn't the Made In USA on the TRC start to be added in 1966, IIRC.

Its got a lot of iffy stuff going on what with that stripe etc.
AND aluminium tail lift!
Looks like its had some work done as they say in Hollywood.

I had DD458 (ex John Lodge) back in the early 80s which had a fretboard replacement, refin in mapleglo and for a moment
I thought this was it resurfacing in fireglo.

Andy Baxter is really expensive ie; a 1975 4001 for £2500!

The stripe is kinda wide and more like what you'd see on a 4005, but this is neck-thru. Different...

Hmm, early bobbin under that horsie? I would have expected a raised lip on a 1964. Thoughts?? Super wide strip in there too.

Ah, DD 417....

If I'm not mistaken, those of us who have been here from very long time will remember this bass, and I personally know a rather unsavory story attached to it. Last I knew it was in the States, and not for sale. Time to revisit some very old mail...

Another oddity is the volute at the back of the headstock.

I would have expected such a "prototype" to happen in lateish 65. My flimsy rationale being the introduction of the volute sometime in 66.

I like how the chrome is stripped off the TP with red paint on the side of it.

I'm no expert on the old ones, but it almost seems to me that it is a reconstruction. The shape of the heel of the neck is odd, and the "skunk stripe" is off center and appears to be two pieces in itself. Weird.
