'77 4001 dullness

I recently tried out a beautiful 1977 4001 that I'm interested in buying. The neck was perfect and is in good condition, but it didn't seem to resonate very well compared to the new 4003s I've played. It felt very dull when just played unplugged and plugged in it had more of a midrange tone than the normal treble bite of rics. Is this common of 4001s of that era? Could it be as simple as just changing the strings? Thanks!

I would want to hear it with new strings (preferably your favorite brand) before I decided not to buy it, especially if you like the neck and overall feel of the bass.

Bassically, Michael

Flatwound strings, perhaps... :?:
