So...
I decided I wanted an old banger to keep around the house and not locked away like my 4003 & 4004 (so the wee ones can't get their mitts on them).
So I bought a husk off the bay for about £350 and then started the long arduous task of buying parts...
The bass was knackered and it's still a bit of an ugly duckling but now that it's been rebuilt and has seen 2 different luthiers it's actually a nice bass to play.
It's had a refret and I just got this back and have been playing it all weekend.
I'm quite happy.
I went for a Kent Armstrong toaster in the neck to compete against the reissue horseshoe, everything else is genuine Ric but nothing is "period" correct.
If I had my time over... I think i'd just buy a brand new 4003 and play the sh*t out of it until it looks as bad as this one...

Very nice; the bass's soul must be happy again. 
(There is something vaguely religious about "resurrecting" busted up old instruments, and spiritual about the results thenafter . . . my 4001 was all chewed up when I bought it, and after getting a refret/fingerboard-refinish/new bridge/befitting set of strings, it's much more conducive to letting music out! )

The best thing about this bass is that I'm immediately comfortable playing it...
Some of that is the flats, some of that is the neck but mostly it's because if it gets dropped or scratched, no f***s will be given because I will have none to give.....
It does sound good though...
