For a gig later this year, I'm working on "Firth of Fifth' and 'Cinema Show'. I know MR was playing his double-neck custom 4001 Ric/12 string combo back then, and played with a pick -- I'm going to try to make do with just my single necked '77 4001 (and a pick). It's been modded so I can switch the cap in and out, though I presume MR's was 'in'. I'm seeking advice on how to get 'that tone' that he got on that album...a tone not at all like Squire's or Lee's, more like McCartney's warm fuzzy sound but with a bit of treble bite, (when he wasn't buried in the mix). I've got lots of leeway to pick amps and other outboard gear...I'll be renting all that.

Oh, a nd I'm also tasked with playing 'Eleventh Earl of Mar', which sounds totally different . Advice on that sound would be welcome too.

I saw the SEBTP tour twice.

Well, I don't know what kind of amp he was using back then, but my guess would be the standard Rotosounds and both pickups on full vol, full treble. And if this clip is any indication, pick the strings just below the neck pickup; a fuller, "rounder" tone. Squire and Geddy I think favored, if not outright soloed, the bridge pickup, and Squire it seems usually picked between the bridge and the bridge pickup.

For "Mar", well I think he was playing his (new) Shergold bass at that point -- which has its bridge pickup much closer to the bridge, right up against it, it looks like -- and a pretty gnarly distortion box! Still pick-and-Rotosounds, I'm sure. But he also had a Hagstrom 8-string during that era, and I wonder if that's what we hear during the crunchy "See the Stewart all dressed up / He's got eyes in the back of his head" part.

Maybe Jason (jdogric12) will chime in. He just did a Genesis tribute gig in Alexandria and may have useful ideas.

Wasn't Mike playing Shergolds by the time they recorded "Eleventh Earle of Mar"??? BTW...I SAW Genesis perform that song---FRONT ROW!!!!

I like Rutherford's sound on that album especially. The strings he used on "Battle of Epping Forest" sound like they're right out of the package.

He was playing the Shergold on the TOTT tour, at least he did the two consecutive nights I saw it.
