Is there an "ideal" string height at the nut above first fret? I realize that string guage plays some part in this, but what't the baseline number? I've been digging around on old threads, can't seem to find that number.

Lower it until there is no fret buz al the way up and down the neck. Open string too of course. Strinbg height is really player preference

Most setups recommend fretting the string at the third fret and adjusting the nut to obtain a clearance of one or two business cards between the first fret and the string.

Just have patience, and take a little material out at a time. If you go to low, your open stings will buzz and you'll either have to shim the nut or replace it.

Or do the trick of filing off nut dust from the top of the nut, mix it with super glue, rebuild the slot, and re-dress the slot from there.
