I got this guitar from Craigslist a couple months ago. It looks, feels, and plays great but I am concerned with the authenticity because the jackplate number is already registered to a different guitar on the registration page.


Info I was given:
-2008 Rickenbacker 325
-Previous owner had it professionally painted (looks like they tried to replicate the Montezuma Brown. Thoughts?)
-Previous may have changed the pickups. Definitely disconnected the middle pickup.

On the Rickenbacker Register, however, the jackplate number comes up as a 650.

Hard to say... It looks authentic enough other then the jackplate.. It is possibly then a replica constructed by a luthier.. Certainly a better then average one.

If it was a real C58 from Rickenbacker it would have the elongated jackplate like these ones...

The 650 Colorado with that serila number is owned by a forumite - it has not been tracked as "Butchered" or parted out.

Perhaps Peter or Gil can email the RRF member who registered it - it is not a collected item and see what became of it...

I don't believe it is an actual C58, I think the previous owner just modified it to look as such. Do all 325 models have the elongated jackplates? (it doesn't look like anybody in that gallery took pictures of their jackplates)

Also, sorry for a dumb question, but whats the best way to ask for Peter or Gil to reach out to that RFF member?

Hope that you did not get dinged too heavily on the price of this..

The parts on it - TRC, tuners and Pickups all seem to be real at least.. They will be worth something in resale value.

For the body cavity picture, is that underneath the pick guard? I don't have any tools to remove it right now but I will get try to get them today or tomorrow so I can get that picture.
Do all 325s have the elongated jack plates? Is it possible that this is a different model of 325 that was modified to look like a c58?
I got this guitar through a trade on craigslist so I wasn't beat up too much on the price. It really does play and feel great. That jack plate is the only thing that makes me question it.

Thanks, Dan. His description seems to be very similar. Unfortunately, all of his pictures have been removed. I PM'ed him, hopefully he can shed some light.

I am quite sure I took the right ones, because the thread was in December 2012. I was impressed by the "quality" of that work. I saved them at 12th of Dec. 2012 (same date of the running thread), if my computer is not totally wrong...

Unfortunately the grain looks very familiar, too!

There were a few changes, maybe we helped to improve a fake:
1. Watch the pickguard.
2. The cover of the bridge is missing now, too.
3. And there is an original Rickenbacker jack plate, also.

I'm very sorry for telling bad news. IMHO the puzzle is solved. (Still hope I'm wrong!)

I wonder how that person concluded it was a fake. Since so many of the parts are real, is it possible that its a bit of a frankenstein guitar?

Anybody have advice on what I should do with it? Sell it for parts?

I can not say if the seller knew it.

I just can say from the pics that someone "improved" the fake work again, as I mentioned before.


Two things You can do: keep and play it or butcher it for the real parts. Talking about the truss rod cover (TRC) I can't judge if it is real or fake.

There is one thing You should not do!!!: It is against the law to sell the complete guitar or fake parts (maybe the TRC is one?).

Judging from the pics it must be a good instrument: play the hell out of it.

Maybe I'll email the guy who traded it to me and tell him that guitar gods will put a spell on him!

Now I know it is the same guitar: just compare the file endings of the dead links in the other thread with those I posted now.

To make the documentation complete I mentioned that in the other, old thread, too.
