4001 internal routing

Looking at the routing of two 4001's today and noticed the 1979 has the circular cuts for the channel between the neck pickup and the main cavity. The 1978 has a smooth cut. So it looks like there was not a definitive stop for the circular cuts and they were possibly doing both at the same time. Does anybody know when they stopped the circular cuts and started the smooth cuts?

Rikk, it is possible the one with the rounded hole rout was a leftover from earlier production and it was finally finished and sold.

It's very possible that the '79 is a leftover body. But it's a jetglow. Nothing out of the ordinary. I would love to hear what kind of routing others have on '78 or '79 4001's.

My 1979 Autumnglo (in the process of being refinished at the moment), original routing except for the little extra to get the neck pickup to the 1/2" position.

I always wondered why the neck pickup route is so huge in comparison to the size of the pickup? The depth would allow for adjustment up and down, but what was the thinking on the width? It seems like a lot of wood to remove unnecessarily at the neck/body joint. Gorgeous refin job BTW.

If I'm not mistaken, that wide routing was called the "Lemmy Option"....you know...in case you wanted to install a Gibson Mudbucker.....

Yeah I read the same thing somewhere myself.
