This appeared on the bay a few months ago, if I remember correctly. I suspect she was originally a fretted model and was detoothed along the way.

The ebony board must be the giveaway

I wrote the guy at the time and he told me that he believed the fingerboard to be original. I told him that it was highly unlikely, but he has had it for quite a while and did not have it re-done. Of course, that means nothing, but he doesn't KNOW that it has been changed. I love the Azure-Glo!

There WERE some ebony board 4001's built in the '70s, according to the Smith book, so maybe he is telling the truth. Thats what I thought when I saw the pics...

Bob, if the fretboard is indeed original, I'd think that the price wasn't too badly inflated.

Just to take this off in a slightly different direction...I,ve just seen and picked up my 73 F/G fretless today after 6 long months. It looks completely stock, (still has the handrest fitted) and it looks and sounds beautiful...Just put it down long enough to write this. It,s wearing rounds but they haven,t done any damage to the board, and much as I love them, I,ll change them out. The other thing is that I bought a SKB case for it...However, when laid in the case the tuners slightly overlap the headstock surround, they don,t fit snug in it...Now I,m afraid to shut the case. I don,t want thsoe wavy grovers any more bent!!...Anyone....

I had a F_nder case (new one) that didn't quite fit the jazz headstock. Cut the foam around the area after pulling up the material.
Looks good for what it does.
If the material is closed cell foam this works fine, if styrofoam should be ok.

Congratulations on finally holding the '73 FL FG in your hands, Andy!
Can the headstock area of the SKB case be modified?
I would buy a RIC silver vintage case for the baby if I owned her.

Paul-Happy New Year! (a day late)
That's a much better solution!
