I do own one of these cool silver tolex guitar stands for 3 guitars. However, I have to rest the open lid against a wall, otherwise the weight of the (tilted) guitars would cause the case to tip over to the back, because the sides of the stands are not attached to the base of it. Is this how it is constructed, or am I missing something?

Mine isn't a Rickenbacker version, but it stands up OK by itself. Is your stand similar to this one?

It looks different. Problem is if the guitars are tilted a little too much towards the back, there is nothing that keeps the case top from getting overly bended open. It would help if both side could be attached to the base of the case with a push button or alike. That would add a lot of stability to the whole construction.

The guitars should be more upright than tilted. The top panel (which has cut-outs for the guitar necks) folds out and attaches to the two sides so that the whole construction is locked into a box shape, as shown in the attached photo - supplied courtesy of RRF Senior Member Graham Griffiths (8mileshigh), from whom I was very pleased to buy this particular stand. I believe that Graham retained another one for his own collection.

The stand has the Rickenbacker badge under the handle and is indeed very cool - and, I believe, sought after. The only downside is that you should really own a Ric acoustic to make full use of it!

James, is this a pic from Graham? That Acoustic looks like it's the PW twelve string I bought from him.

Indeed it is, Alex - so I must assume that it is the same acoustic you bought from Graham.

Can someone provide more information about the history of these RIC cases?

They were first made for and available at the RIC 75th Anniversary Celebration weekend (last weekend of August 2006). That is when and where I bought mine.

Here is the preface to that.

At the Southern California Confluence the year before that, I had some of my instruments on display in my Fender tweed guitar case stand. John Hall came by and noticed that, ands said something to the effect, "I should have some of those made", to which I commented with something like, "That would be cool, they'd probably sell."

There are a lot of pictures of these in use at various get-togethers. The one that seems tilted backwards may have had its hinges bent back too far so now it tends to go to far back. The lower edges of the side panels should be flat against the sides of te case, with two of the "cushions"pushed up tightly against them to help hold them in place. Here are some examples:
