I'm thinking it's a 1936. It's got the "pat pend" pickup, but it has the volume control on the treble side. Of course the frets are shot.

Was it expensive? The spanish bakelites usually go for waaaay more than the hawaiian models which one can have for quite cheap. What does it sound like?

Well they usually are expensive but I got a super deal on this one.
It sounds wonderful! If the frets weren't so bad I'd play it all the time.

It just has that "magic" tone. No really, it's got incredible tone.

Can the frets actually be changed on these bakelites? I thought they were designed to basically put on a new neck when needed?

No, they can't be changed. They are molded into the neck.

Well, just as a decoration alone it looks great. A fullsized wooden replacement neck to play it full time will be pricey, i guess
