New on RRF: short introduction

Have been lurking on RRF for a while, but thought would be nice to introduce myself a bit. Don't know if this the right subforum, but as a bassplayer this subforum feels good.

Although I've been more or less a member of the Precision Bass-church for ages, I have a healthy Rickenbacker fetish as well. :D

Few years ago I had a nice '74 4001 in Burgundy (edit), but ended up selling it....

Since last year I've entered the Rickenbacker-church again. I have a strong preference for green/blue custom colors from the rich USA car history ('50/60-s), so the best Rickenbacker finish from that perspective is ... Blue Boy! Was able to find two for sale in Europe for reasonable prices last year, so bought them both with the goal to keep the best sounding of the two. To my surprise the specs differed a lot (the '04 being much chunckier that the '05) and they each have their own tonecharacter. Decided to keep them both, and have upgraded the '05 with a toaster and flatwounds.

I recently also found a '02 4003 in Turquoise.

I have plans to do some more upgrades, and have ordered a new 4003S to give it a complete make-over (refin in BlueBoy, toaster, horseshoe, 4001 wiring).

I'm on this forum for only Rickenbacker fun and to learn, but besides that I like to built some basses now and then under the name Peterbuilt Basses for who is interested.

Welcome! Nice stuff.

Funny, I love TUR on guitars but it doesn't seem to work for me on the bass. What's wrong with me?

Welcome Peter! That old one you had was Burgundy, BTW. Burgundy was an overall "see through" red, while Ruby was a solid metallic red. Gorgeous nonetheless!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

@ Paul: thanks, I stand corrected, edited it. The odd thing is...I saved a picture of the controlcavity which seems to state Ruby, but ofcourse the finish was Burgundy:

Btw: Santa recently sent me your book, a great read!

Ah, cavity graffiti! Well, since the color Ruby wasn't developed until 1981 (the first of the metallic colors and at first was clear red over silver), "Ruby" or "Rudy" was likely one of the builders who needed to sign each instrument as it passed their work station (similar to those little paper tags you see that say "inspected by Alice" or whomever). The Z following 4001 was a sort of batch control device of an indeterminable production time. Likely, batch Z was made after batch Y and so forth. The names and lettering changed over the years, so there's no telling what it all meant at the time.

Welcome Peter. You may be aware, but I'll mention that the Blue Boy 4003 is once again for sale in the Japanese market as a new offerring. History repeats! Nice collection of Blues.

Thanks, and noticed those. Color is more as faded / yellowed BB with more green in it.
