Will this work on my RIC Excelite nut driver? A coworker has this and uses it on metal tools.

That's what I used on my tool Jason. Just don't use too much pressure and be sure to rotate the business end of your tool as you work the head!

Yeah, what Dane said. I used a belt sander on my truss rod adjustment tool and the excess metal came off quite easy. it would be very easy to too remove too much with a bench grinder like that.
Wear eye protection and enjoy the sparks show!!

I can't believe that this topic is actually serious.

I was rather pleased with myself. I couldn't believe it either!

Hey, it's stayed on topic, so far. We're all on the ball.

Ok, so co-worker dude is bringing in a hand-operated grinder for me to try, since the one in the pic would likely be overkill. How thin can I get it without compromising the strength and rigidity of the tool? I know to take it very easy and slow, and to think of it like a haircut, better to not cut enough than to cut too much, if you know what I mean.

Go slow, go lightly, keep rotating the tool consistently so you don't lean in too hard or linger too hard on one spot and make the wall of the tool too thin. Stop and check for consistent grind often.

I'd put the nut driver in a vise and rotate the grinder...but the other way around will work OK too. Slow and steady, as any sculptor will say, it's better to take too little off at once.

Jason,
Will the instrument be in close proximity to the grinding? if so, check the fit often and only take off as much as you need to do the job. The metal on the tool will come off easy so go real light and as everyone has said, rotate the tool constantly to keep the cut consistent. I had to taper the cut a bit, more tip heavy, and the material is quite thin there but the tool still functions fine since there is not a ton of torque being applied.
