The nut on my 2002 650D Dakota is made of what looks like black plastic. Does anyone know exactly what it is?
Has anyone changed a 650 nut to bone or Tusk? Thoughts?
Thanks!

Delrin, perhaps.

The vintage cream colored nuts were Delrin, but the black ones are Bakelite.

Thanks!
What's the opinion on changing the nut to bone?

Why?
Unless the existing nut can't be adjusted to taste, replacing it is a pretty low-return proposition, IMO. Any sonic improvements will only be audible (if at all) on open strings.

And, very likely only on an acoustic guitar at that.

Thanks all. The high E string is a bit too close to the edge of the fretboard. I can re-cut and fill to move it in a bit but I was considering just replacing it. Hence the questions on material.

Sorry for jumping to the wrong conclusion
I don't honestly think the material matters - use whatever you're comfortable working with. I'd say that Tusq is as good as anything else out there, particularly if you want to keep it black.
