Off topic, but it reminds me: for the first time in a couple of decades, I'm going to need to purchase a couple of pairs of blue jeans. Yes, to me, that is two halves of one word. My favorite are Levi's 505's. They used to be the same as the 501's, just with a zipper instead of the button fly. Are they still the same?

510's all the way!

751's are perfect for wearing heavy boots. My one and only type of trousers for daily use.
And they do not squish the testies...


Unfortunately Levi's has given up the double stitched inside of the legs. So far a step back in quality. - Damn number crunchers...

In former times Levi's advertised their trouseres with that double stitch, at least in Germany.
To change that is a huge mistake, IMHO.

It made me searching for a replacement brand. And I am sure I am not the only one.

LOL! I'm glad you can still wear them. I am soooooooo far down the road from being able to wear skinny jeans. I am not going to deal with 501's, and I don't wear boots except when I have to, either for the weather or the requirements of a particular gig or occasion. And I like my blue jeans to look like blue jeans, not baggy pants. Only Be-Bop-A-Lula gets to wear red. So, I have my hopes up that when I do go to the store here in the next few days, that 505's are still the same. After reading the above posts, I am preparing myself for not only a possible disappointment because it does appear that some aspects of manufacturing have changed, but also because I'm sure I will get "sticker shock" when I pull a pair off the rack.

Sorry, I didn't mean for this to turn into a rant. I don't mean to be a curmudgeon. It is just that the only issue in shopping for blue jeans used to be making sure you measured yourself correctly and allowed an extra inch at the waist and two or three inches at the inseam so they would shrink down properly, and to make sure you washed the first load by themselves, or at most, with other older blue jeans so they didn't bleed over everything else, and worn-out blue jeans were just that: worn-out blue jeans, not fashion statements.

But in the end, I do have hope since the commercial does have Rickenbacker instruments in it.

I can still fit into them and I have two kids that I have owned up to so I am no longer concerned with any of the potential risks of wearing such a snug fit.

So-called "number crunchers" such as myself have NOTHING to do with the decision to make product changes like this. Quite the opposite really, in my experience. The VP of Products or Marketing or whatever doesn't need me to tell him or her that they're spending $XXXXX on that second stitch, and wouldn't listen to me either way if I recommended to continue it or to slash it.

I just found "number crunchers" in a dictonary and it sounded nice and right in that moment. Maybe I missed some part of its connotation. That was not intended. - All right?

Maybe penny pincher is a better word for those special guys.

Go to a Levi's store and try a few different pairs out, Scott. I'm 48 years old and a lifelong Levi's wearer and for me the 505's were always my jean of choice. I'm wearing a pair right now as a matter of fact. But when I went in a couple years ago to replace my older pairs (that had become too tight around the waistband!) I discovered that there are many more choices now than there used to be. Being a guy who LOVES choices, I tried on as many different pairs as my patience would allow. And what I found out is that some of the other newer models are pretty cool too. The 505's are a little different than they used to be, and I actually discovered that I like the newer ones better. My old ones sit very high on my waist. They ride up so high they cross my belly and have a habit of getting too tight when I over eat and becoming uncomfortable. Plus...being so high-waisted, they look dated (see SNL Mom Jeans commercial on youtube). The newer 505's have a lower waist so they are less susceptible to belly fluctuations! There are several (maybe as many as 5 or more) different models of skinny jeans too. You don't have to be a bean pole to wear some of them. There's also 514's that are pretty similar to 505's but have just a little bit of stretch to them. And they have them in different colors (I think black jeans look cool on stage!) My girlfriend loves my 508's and my 511's (both are skinny). So go try some out...Change is good. Chicks dig a guy who's open to change!

Back to the original topic...I was in my local Levi's store last week and noticed some print ads hanging on the wall that featured a couple Ricks. I don't remember who the band was and I can't find the photos on the internet. It might have been The Jam. But here's another Levi's ad I found featuring a Rick.

It seems that someone over there at Levi's has a thing for Ricks...which is another reason for me to like the brand!

Jeff, thanks. That was what I was afraid of. I like the higher waist, like my dress pants. I guess I'll just have to plan a day to try on all the variations.
