Yikes,a set-neck with what looks to be the world's largest bass pickup gouged into the join area.

God! that bass pickup looks like one of those Guild humbuckers from a 70's starfire bass. Wow. Who could bring themselves to do that!? (Well, other than lemmy, of course  )

Cliff Burton comes to mind.

UK bass…might be a Hagstrom pickup? I know Guild got a lot of their hardware from them. It's sacrilege now, but put yourself back in the day. Might of seemed like a cool thing to do. I screwed up plenty of cool things in my time! I actually watched a guy strip the paisley off of a '68 Tele because "it would look so much better in walnut."

Nope- It's a Guild pup. The Hagstrom BiSonic is a completely animal.
At least the rout is fixable and a new pick guard would cover the scars.

Well paisley is pretty ugly.

Paisley RIC? The addition of that pickup was unfortunate. May as well complete the scene with a new paint job. And now the new owner will know where to send it!

That big Guild mudbucker was in my '68 when I bought it. Actually, it sounded pretty good when paired with the bridge pup.

FWIW, do not try this at home, YMMV.

I'd go along with that statement and the mod even today. But I started out playing on about a 1969-1970 Fender Jazz bass and it was the most godawful bass I've ever played. So bad that I put it down to play my Japanese Ventura EBO copy! I've never understood why the market for those hideous '70s CBS era Fender basses has gotten so out of hand...

Some of those '70s f basses are okay. Mine happens to be fantastic. Plenty of so-so ones as well, but those weren't the best of times for many American guitar companies. Seems like the early '70s RICs are highly regarded though.

It was a common mod to put a big humbucker in basses years ago, especially Fenders, think Berry Oakley and Mel Schacher for ex. I got a 60's P bass in 1977 with an EBO pickup in the neck position.

A la Billy Sheehan.
