I've used Windex® and a toothbrush, plus lots of work.

This Jazz Chorus was over thirty years old when I bought it from some guy who abused it. Decades of dust and grime on it. I used Fantastic cleaner, a wash cloth, and paper towels. I then used automobile Armor All on it to give the black a shine like it was brand new.

I learned about that on a guitard forum. Does work well for small amps and doesn't really take all that long being a bassist and not a guitarded. 8)
