Thumb rest for new 4003s?

I recently saw a picture of one on this forum. Now I can't find it. The thumb rest attaches to the top edge of the pickguard using the existing pick guard screws.

Anyone see this same picture? Or know who made it?

Thanks Dave.

I was thinking you were talking about the plexi one that I think Jeff had on one of his basses. I think those can be found at Pickguardian...

He is thinking of the ZM rest but the one I got from Pickguardian just looks right for a Rick bass. :D

Yep, that's the one! Thinking of putting one of them on my 4003s. Until I saw your photo of it in another thread, I was unaware that anyone was making these, but I think they are a cool vintage touch to dress up any RIck bass! :o

The ZM mounts using the existing holes. Where would you mount the Pickguardian one? Drill new holes?

Yes, drill holes, just like Rickenbacker did back in the '60s and '70s. Place the holes on either side of the neck pickup lead routing that goes from the pickup to the control cavity.

Aren't we talking about 2 different things here?
I wouldn't call that last photo a thumb rest. If you used it to anchor your thumb, your fingers would be on the wrong side of the strings.... 8)  :P

In my book, I call the old Rickenbacker original thingie a "tug bar" which is what it is when playing with either the thumb or a pick. Your little or other chosen finger would anchor on it, so certainly not a "thumb rest."

Yes we are. And I think I was the one who muddied the waters here, sorry bout that!

I just love those "tug bars" or whatever you call them, the plexiglass ones that came on the old '60s and early '70s 4001s.

Both of them have their functions, I should not have high-jacked the thread...

I figured as much!

And yes, I agree that "thumbrest" is not the preferred nomenclature. That's why I use "Plexiglass thingie" to refer to it precisely...
