Hi, probably discussed before, but does anyone have any special techniques for cleaning the black looking stains from hand grime (not mine) on both sides of a maple neck? I would like to do this without damaging the finish. Thank you.

I take it the finish is intact and this is not dirt that has been impregnated into the maple?

If so, try naphtha and a clean cotton rag/diaper. And do so with some ventilation (open window, outdoors, etc.).

P.S. I originally wrote open widow, but thought better of it when I previewed my post.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, impregnated is a good word describing the grime. I also meant without damaging anything. Thanks

I think once the dirt is in the grain of the wood the only solution is sanding it down to get past that layer, but, hopefully, those with more experience in handling this will show up here.

I believe that is the case.

I actually like the look and feel of the worn finish to a certain degree.

Yes, I don't mind the worn look either, its the dirty, I don't respect my instrument look that bothers me. Character is good, neglect is not. All good points, thank you.
