In my book (literally and figuratively), Chris Squire was
the ambassador of the Rickenbacker bass. No one carried on longer with the Rick as his primary instrument. No one could match the "voice" he brought from the instrument. No one looked "cooler" than he did playing the Rick. His talent and his presence in music on stage and off were gifts to us all. My three conversations with him will not be, but must be, enough for me. My condolences to his wife, Scotty, his family, his bandmates, and his fans.

Just heard the news, devastated doesn't really cover it. I bought a Ric as my first instrument because Chris played one, like so many others here. Countless hours trying to learn his licks taught me most of what I know about bass. Let's all raise a glass and put Fragile on the headphones.

. . . or Close to the Edge, or Drama, or 90125, I say . . . Chris was the prime mover behind my taking up the bass guitar, and therefore, musicianship. It took me a long time to finally own a Rick, but the incentive to try to get (near to) that sound, to play like he did, was with me from the outset. Of course, that may not be possible, or even feasible, but what a great guiding star to have had!
I wonder (worry) where his Rick will end up . . . ?

Both Chris and Vincent Gallo have been friends for some time, and Vincent possesses many collectable Ricks, including one or two of Chris's lesser-known instruments. I can't imagine any other private collector obtaining Chris' revered RM 1999. Personally, I would rather it end up in a museum where the rest of us might see it again.
In the meantime, turn to page 32 or your bibles and join in praise and remembrance!

Well said, Paul. I did (hopefully, not morbidly..) instantly think of his gear. Hoping Scotty gets the best possible advice. A museum scenario would be most desirable.

A truly cool idea would be a place where one could play it a bit (under supervision, of course), so we can all feel the presence of his gift.

Vincent Gallo was the first person I thought of as well.

This is a hard one to take, fellas...
Squire is at least half of the reason for the fascination I've had with Rickenbacker basses for almost 35 years.
Never met the man, but have been in the same room with him enough times.
I have a Yes tune humming in my head pretty much every day. Now it's just gonna make me sad.

If Vince Gallo got ahold of it, it'd just join the rest of his collection never to be seen again, but I doubt he could afford it, even if he used all his royalties from The Brown Bunny and Buffalo 66 combined...

Well assuming it is not specified in a will, I'm sure Scotty will do the right thing. it's just a real xxxx time for the family - keep the good vibes going their way, I'm sure they can use it.
