I thought it was his '70's white Jazz bass..... ?
That's what he used in concert when he played that song,at any rate....plus,the album track really seems to feature that J bridge pickup tone......

My understanding was that it was a Jazz bass, as well...

It was definitely a Fender. I'd bet that Squire probably couldn't say which bass it was, but he might have remembered the color!

The sound of Chris's RM on Drama's "i am a camera" is hard to beat.

Cool. I will have to check that out. Is that played with a P-bass, too? In the many years I have been playing bass, I have never owned a bass with a precision pickup. I have been thinking I would like to give one a try since I recently found that my Zon jazz sounds really good with the neck pickup by itself. It has a nice crisp and grindy sound.

Don't know if you're joking ( )....the RM is The shorthand name for Chris original Rickenbacker.(Rose-Morris1999 is the import model number given to the ones sent to England...which they called a 4001S stateside).
The Rickenbacker is definitely the one used on that track.

As far as i know,Chris has only owned 2 Fender basses,the 70's Jazz,and a late 60's modified Telecaster bass.
He did have a Lakland P-bass much later on....i think it appeared around the time of the Ladder album?

I owned a few Fender basses over the years myself,and pretty much decided they just are not for me. I currentlyhave an 8-string Fernandes bass that has a Lace Sensor Man of War PJ pickup system in it. (Which sounds fantastic).

Without a doubt, Into the Lens is the Rick. I'd put the sound next to the sound on the big 3 albums (Yes Album, Fragile, CTTE).

Funny the mention of the Tele bass - In the Rig Rundown with Squire and Howe, the interviewer points to the J bass and Squire ruminates "Is that the one I had an extra pick up put in?"...I'm not sure he paid a whole lot of attention to his guitars other than to think "this one sounds/feels good!".

I seem to remember Squire playing a jazz bass in 77 GFTO tour for one song, and my thought was that it might have been To Be Over... I remember that show well, Donovan opened, Wakeman was back in the fold (and drinking heartily!) and Chris was wearing the backgammon oufit...

(Smacking myself upside the head) Yes,"into the Lens" is what i meant to say. I have the Buggles 2nd album where that song title is actually "i am a camera",so that's what i was thinking of when i mentioned it.

Definitely read an interview with Chris mentioning Precision Bass. And as a trivia matter, his Jazz was Natural finish, not white, blonde or cream...
