3001 whith a neck pickup!

I bought a NOS 3001 pickup from Ebay, just in case I could find a fretless neck for a new projekt. That was a year ago, now I think that I could use it as a neck pickup in my 3001(I used it as a neck pickup in my V63, and it was great).

Do you think it´s a good idea? My bass is not original, so the value is not so high if I sell it.

This is my bass: http://www.rickresource.com/register/vi ... ine%3Dtrue

I'd do it. Just make sure you get it in just the right location though. Since the stock pickup is almost in the middle of the bass, I'd consider making it a bridge pickup in the same spot they are on jazz basses. More midrage definition there.

I'm with Dane - looking at a picture of a 3001 that's really close to plan view, the existing pickup is about 84% of the scale length. If you added a PU just behind the pickguard it would be at about 90% of the scale length (or 10% if you prefer measuring from the approximate center line of the bridge saddles).

Now I've been neglectful in the last few months getting my old computer to someone so they can get it to boot up...maybe this week; but I had a file on there with the PU measurements of about 1 dozen basses I had access to, one of them my former J bass. If I recall the percentages for that bass were 82% for the neck PU and 91% for the bridge. I think that is approximately the relative locations on a 4002.

I'd also worry about taking out wood near the neck pocket...

When I had my custom built, my buddy who was doing the work (and is a physicist by trade) created a model to estimate the frequency responses for various placements. We went with about 85/95, which worked out on the 34" scale to 5.75" from the bridge for the neck, and 1.75" for the bridge, which is pretty close to some of the older J basses. Since the RIck is a little shorter scale (33.25") maybe going that close to the bridge is too close.

I would join the chorus on this one,and put the 2nd pickup in back by the bridge.
