320/325 control knob spacing

Is it just me or does it appear that for some models the four larger control knobs are arranged over-center and others are clearly equal distant from each other in a square pattern? I could see troubles that RIC might have had in the very beginning converting the earliest 2-knob models to 4-knob ones, but why with later models? Was spacing behind the pickguard for the pots the reason? Are my eyes just playing tricks on me? Personally, I prefer it when they all look properly spaced and balanced.
