Hey guys.
Has anyone every built a guitar well?
I am going to build a guitar wall at my new studio on which I am going to hang my guitars (12, 10 of which are Rickenbackers, about 50/50 basses/guitars ratio).

Wall width is 415cm (13ft 7.39 inches), height is 260cm (8ft 6.38 inches) (all net).
I would like to leave some room for future expansion but that's not overly critical, I can always put more guitars on different walls and/or on stands.

The 4005 is very long @ 124cm (48.81 inches) (and also a tad wider than a 360!) but my other basses are 114cm (44.88 inches) long so I used that to calculate maximum height, 360 series is about 38cm (15 inches) wide.
The 4005 would be installed at a specific designated location but I want to be able to hang any guitar anywhere.

What is the suggested distance from the ceiling to make sure you won't bump an instrument into it when you take it out?

What is the suggested distance from the neighboring guitars to make sure you won't bump and instrument with another?

Hi Gil, a lot depends on your method of hanging the guitars (as far as measurements), so bear in mind that my measurements are based on small leather straps around the E tuning keys.

I like to set a fixed distance for height and between the guitars (allowing room for a neck to stagger their position. I have mostly guitars but also a 4005 and found that 6" from ceiling works great for guitars and 8" for guitars and basses. 20" center-to-center between the guitars.

Height depends on the instruments and available wall space.

I use the same method as Collin (leather straps around the tuning pegs) and have for over 10 years.

If it was good enough for $35,000 D'Angelico instruments at Mandolin Bros., it's good enough for me.

Yep! It was your point above (along with Graham's Rick-o-Walls) that convinced me to ditch the fancy guitar hangers. I like the clean look against the wall and its perfectly fine for the guitar.

Heck, I've seen $80K guitars hung like this at Guitar Center Hollywood.

I have a gridwall system that I got pretty cheap from a local retail supply store. It looks like something out of the 1980's and I love it! I use the String Swing hangers, made for this kind of system with the standard 3" x 3" spacing.

I'm using 4 panels, each 2' x 6'. Each panel has four brackets. First I put up 2 8' 2x4's, with about 10 screws each, straight into studs. Then the brackets into the 2x4's. I painted the 2x4's to match the wall, and left the brackets and panels chrome for that 80's look. When I have the "studio lights" on, it looks super rad.

I am able to display 20 instruments this way (2 rows of 10). I display 16 guitars of regular size, and then the 4 hangers on the end hold 2 mandolins and 2 basses. Over the weekend I ordered 3 mandolin hangers of the flat type (no extending angled 4" arm like I currently have) so I can hang my 3 5002's parallel to the gridwall, behind other instruments. I lowered the 2 bass hangers to the same level of the 8 guitar hangers in the bottom row, and there was still room to hang basses that low.

Most important is to consider the weight, and go straight into studs. If it's only attached to drywall, you'll come home at the end of the day to find a pile of guitars on the floor! Glad I did my homework on this... I read some other people's horror stories on the web.

Huh?
I've never heard of nor seen this method before. Your photos don't clearly reveal what you are doing. You are putting a leather strap around both E tuners and then looping that strap over a hook in the wall? That does not in anyway bend the tuners? And what about Fender guitars...how would you hang them?

It's a small leather strap that slips over the Low and High-E string tuners and hangs onto a cup hook in the wall. High-end guitar shops (such as Mandolin Bros. in New York and Guitar Center Hollywood) hang guitars the same exact way.

No, it doesn't bend the tuners (it takes a LOT more force to bend a tuner than a 6-12 lb guitar or bass will put).

Fenders hang the same way, though the strap is more vertical than a conventional headstock. Still works fine though. I have a couple Fenders hanging up, including a Telecaster.

I use leather ukulele hangers. Same as the guitar type (and just as strong), but since they're shorter you don't see the strap/hook once they're hanging up.
