Trapeze Tailpiece stringing question

Hi folks! Long time Rickenbacker fan, first time poster on the forum here.
I recently bought a 6-string 660, and it's marvelous. I just have a question about stringing it up.
The slots on the trapeze tailpiece have keyhole shaped holes, and my intuition tells me that they string right through, and however they sit, they sit. Occasionally, however, one of the unwound strings will "kink" at a sharp angle, almost similar to how one will pre-bend the ball end of a string to hook it onto a bigsby tailpiece.
Is it common practice to kink the strings up, so they sit very snugly into the keyhole bit? Or will doing this cause string breakage?
