Unknown Tony Jackson Song
Re: Unknown Tony Jackson Song
Michael: Thanks so much for letting us know about Almost There. An interesting stylistic blend of the Kinks and The Who. Tony was a most unique artist with a distinctive voice that added a raw edge to the Searchers in the early days.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Re: Unknown Tony Jackson Song
Indeed rare and very interesting because I instantly recognised the voice of Brian Matthews, who at the age 88, is occasionally still D-Jaying away on BBC Radio. However, what threw me was when he announced it was the Top of the Pops Show. Being that here in the UK Top of the Pops was never a radio show; TOTP (as it was known) was on television not on radio.
So, after a bit of cyber-space digging, I discovered that Brian Matthews did indeed host a BBC radio programme by the name of the Top of the Pops Show though, it was never broadcast in the UK. Instead, regular broadcasts were recorded on 12-inch vinyl discs (later onto audio tape) by the BBC Transcription Service based in Shepherd’s Bush, London and sent overseas to participating radio stations for broadcast. Hence, such programmes were never heard by UK listeners.

Initially the hour long radio version of Top of the Pops billed itself as “featuring live London performances of Britain’s top sounds.” The general format featured four or five different artists / groups doing three songs each, often with a brief interviews from Brian Matthews. This format changed in 1969, when the top names became less willing, for what ever reason, to cut live tracks for the BBC, and performances from TV and records were used instead to fill out programmes.

Re: Unknown Tony Jackson Song
The link in the opening post is gone (does anybody have a copy?) but I'm assuming it refers to the 70th installment of the BBC Top of the Pops transcription discs. As Michael noted, the Tony Jackson group played these songs:
A1 –Tony Jackson Group Almost There 2:15
A8 –Tony Jackson (3) Interview
Interviewer – Brian Matthew
A9 –Tony Jackson Group You're My Number One 2:23
B9 –Tony Jackson Group Never Leave Your Baby's Side 1:55
I think this was their only appearance on the TOTP discs
