Pot Replacement on 4003

Hi guys,

Would changing all the pots on my 4003 from the stock 330k to 250k get it any closer to the 4001 sound (but still keeping the same pickups) or would the difference be negligible?

That change would make the bass sound darker. To get a clearer, more classic Rick bass tone, you'd need to change the tone pots to 500K, and the volume pots to 250K.

Hi Ace,

Thanks for that. What about the capacitors, would they need changing as well to a different value?

The caps are good quality .047uF Cornell-Dubillier. While there are better caps out there, these are fine. I carry the correct pots in matched pairs. If you're interested, PM me.

Do you think it would be easier and more practical to just buy a complete LH 4001 harness?

I dunno if Dane does left handed harnesses, but I have two right handed harnesses he made, one for my 4003S, the other for my 4003, and both sound great! I even had him make me a Fender P-J harness V-B-T, which I will report back on, as soon as I finish the body of that one.

I do build left handed harness, but like everyone else (including RIC) I use right handed pots, so they still rotate clockwise if you want the same taper. I can wire them so they rotate backwards, but the taper is backwards too, causing them to be all in pretty fast.

Wouldn't it be simpler just to use a right-handed harness and drill holes and put the knobs on the back of the body?

We've seen stranger things, haven't we? I used to love trawling Mike Parks's old "Rick Hall of Shame" back in the 90's.
