Starting the restoration on my 68 4001. Had a competent tech take care of the neck adjustment and it plays much better. I am looking for a few items for the restoration. Will likely have Tony at Pickguardian cut me a new guard (original is long gone). Does anyone have a template for a late 60s 4001 in electronic format? Jury is still out on whether the back painted clear guard or the opaque white is period correct for a July 68. Guessing flat head pickguard screws would be the ones to find. Any suggestions on the correct size? Also looking for a toaster reissue and possibly a wiring harness, though I may build my own. Any low tension string suggestions or are the Rick strings the way to go? I like the sound of round wounds on a Rick. Thanks all! PS If I ever learn how to attach a photo I will do so!

Use real oval head pickguard screws; flat heats are totally the wrong type of screws.

Back painted plexi pickguards are not original to any Rick bass beyond the first series of the 4000 model that had the gold 'guard.

I am not positive, but there may be some variations of the pickguard shape in that time frame as to the length of the large area between the neck and bridge pickup surround. Your screw holes will be your guide there.

I build reproductions of early Rickenbacker harnesses. I stock the correct pots, jacks, wire, switch, and I have a couple of original .047 Ajax "Blue Caps" left.

Sorry Jeffrey, I meant slotted screws. Thanks for the input on the guard. That will save me a few bucks on a repro.

TI Jazz Rounds are very low tension. I have a slightly used set that I'd let go for a low price if you want to try them before forking out the full price for new.

Tim, do you happen to have the original harness, or any parts from it left? Whenever possible, I like to use the original date coded pot casings.

Unfortunately no. The bass was gutted and Alembics were installed. Selling them to fund the parts I need for the resto.

AlembRicks sound wicked. But in a 1968 .....nope.

I think Tony from Picjguardian has all the period correct templates for older Ric pickguards. He actually has some downloadable PDF format images on his website for at least a couple Ric guards. Post photos! It's always like a scary movie seeing what people do to old Rics, and these guys can quote you chapter and verse on the correct parts if we see what it looks like now. Dan's harnesses come highly recommended if you want an accurate resto. Hoe do the truss rod nuts look?
