I've seen that kind of finish checking on '50s Capris. My guess is severe temperature variations, very cold then brought into heated environment.

I suppose that is finish checking, although it looks a lot like a thick paint job with a 4" brush.
Scotty would know, for sure.

Could it be wrapped with some sort of foil? The fretboard seems unaffected

The striations are remarkably consistent in direction and relative alignment... like a paint brush, all right!
I have no idea. Finish checking is usually very random, scattered and running off in multiple directions, at least in my limited experience. This? Call me confused.

It sure looks like brush marks to me, too. You’d think the “refinisher” would have used a can of automotive spray paint....

Well, I don't know who that is, and if "brush marks" was the intended effect, then, well, OK.... (I can appreciate artistic license.)
