Spam from Users Here

I've been receiving a ton of spam emails from users on here. I'm sure the users are not actually sending it, but it's all from people I recognize on here.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Also, why do we have registered users named "Bing (bot)" and "Google (bot)"?
They are listed as on-line now.

Weird - I haven't. What email address are they coming from? Like, emails sent through the RRF system, or just from people you know from here?

It's Spam-Bots hijacking accounts. My wife's Facebook account got spam-botted somehow, all her friends and relatives started getting weird stuff with her name on it. She had to change her password and some other stuff to clear it up.

It's only from people that have sent emails to me from here.

Nothing here... all involved should change passwords at a very minimum. Good luck with it.

I saw that happening awhile back, like three or four years ago, but it didn't seem to be associated with particular website. I just noticed that certain people who emailed me regularly where "sending" me spam stuff, but it was coming into my inbox under their email address. I forwarded the emails to the affected parties, and also reported it to my email provider, and eventually it stopped. I haven't seen anything like that happen recently though...

It started about 3-4 years ago and then tapered off. Now it's back.

They are only from members on here that have sent me an email previously.

It always has something like:

"Hey Kevin, I thought you ,might like this" and then there will be a link.

If it's direct emails from people that have sent you emails here, it's probably their email doing it, not RRF. Is it predominantly yahoo emails?

No, doesn't seem to be related to yahoo.

If the return addresses are incorrect ([email protected] shows as [email protected]) then one of two things has happened. 1) Your contact list was comprised/acquired, and the list is being used to fish against you. 2) Someone else's contact list was comprised/acquired, and the list is being used to fish against you.

Acquired contact list are run through databases to find matches. Known matches of friends and acquaintances are much more successful when spam fishing than purely made up names.

I have 667 contacts in my email. I only receive these spam emails from people on here, some who are not in my contact list.

It looks we have a winner! RRF

Kevin drops the mic back atcha'.

I just got another one.

This one is "from" Kevin Kuney.

He's not in my email list.

It can only be coming from here.

Someone must have harvest e-mails, most likely, one of the new "spam" members that have joined recently.

I used to get these kinds of spam e=mails a few years ago from some "members". I just delete them/sent them to my junk folder, then get rid of them. Do not respond to these. I am certain you can tell from the text as to whether it really came from an RRF member, or not.
