1985 360/12 - New Case Too Small

Hi Folks. I bought a 1985 360/12 and it didn't come with a case. I went to the local shop and got a standard hard shell 330/360 case, took it home and my guitar won't fit in it!! I can kind of squeeze the body in but then when I try to close it it puts pressure on the neck and I am NOT. comfortable with that. They said I could bring it back and they'd find something but had anyone ever experienced this before?

I'm kind of worried because they will only offer credit for the return but if new cases don't work wtf am I supposed to do? I'd be irritated if I'm forced into buying the vintage style case that's $100 more just because the normal kind won't work.

I am very certain this isn't a short scale case ;-)

Is this something common?

Could you post a photo of the "standard hard shell 330/360 case" that you bought, exterior and interior shot? Perhaps it wasn't what it was advertised to be.

This isn't the exact photo but I bought the same one.

Well that's the current RIC hardshell case. As you can see, the inside top of the case appears to have a cutout for the neck, headstock, etc. Even though this type of case wasn't being issued in 1985, it should still fit your 360-12, though it might be a bit snug around the body.

What makes you believe that the case is closing too tightly on the neck? Can you close the case with the guitar inside without forcing the case closed before securing the latches?

Nope, have to squeeze the body into the case and when I try to close the cover it pushes down on the neck. Yes, I have to force it closed.

You shouldn't have to force the case closed. That's not good.

The case that came with your guitar in the mid-1980s probably looked something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1960s- ... rk:33:pf:0

I don't know your situation, but if I were you I'd take the guitar and case back to the seller, show them it didn't fit and get a refund.

I have a '90 360/12 and 360/6. One vintage reissue that fits my 12. I will see how it fits in the case that came with the 6 string tonight. It is very similar to the one Ron posted but monkey fur interior and open top.

I recently learned when Rick went to CNC, it was after my guitars. I'm betting that is the issue because I have Pickguardian cut me an upper guard for my 360 using his pattern and it was slightly off.

I wanted to post an update to this. The entire thread was wrong. I feel like a real bonhead, but I tried it a couple more times and something was blocking the case from closing properly, therefore putting weird pressure on the neck.

New cases fit a 1985 Rick 360 just fine! :-)

Andy why not just take it back and let the dealer set things right. Their approach seems to be responsible and they may have options than you can find to resolve the situation.

I got it sorted!!! Apparently when you buy a new case that has never had a guitar in it the foam is just a little tight. It’s all good now.

Glad it ended well, Andy! I guess you have demonstrated that when it comes to solving Rickenbacker mysteries, no case is too small.
