What wood used for Capri necks?

Post by Hotzenplotz »

Simple question:

Actually I'm wondering which wood was used for the neck of the good old Capri (e.g. 330 from '58) with the 2" body.

As far as I know the body was made from alder.

So we have the fretboard, the darker part in the middle (plus the "wings") an the two parts of the lighter "main" wood.
All answers are very much appreciated!

Alright, here's part one of the answer:

The fretboard was made of padouk. That was found out in an old thread by Paul, THAT Paul (jingle jangle).

Still missing are the answers for the both outer sides and the stripe.
Judging from different pictures actually maple and walnut seem to be the answer.
Anybody got a guess?

Traditionally the necks are made of maple and strips of shedua, which has the appearance of walnut. It went back and forth a couple times during the last 60 years.

Padouk is correct for the fretboard of a Capri. It’s very red, almost orange when freshly cut and ages to a medium brown color over time.

Mystery solved.

BTW: Next week I'll see my first capri in the flesh! - Exciting!
Now I'll know what's in my hands.
