I'm looking at
this newish maple-neck 4003S in "Plumglo" and thinking, this is actually Burgundy Mist, right? How cool would it look with a Fender-y 4-ply beveled-edge tort guard?

Oh my, no. How about classic Rick gold guards?

IMHO, I don't think the tort looks good even on that Jazzmaster.

Tort is weird. I think it looks great on certain instruments, like certain Fenders and Kays. But I’ve never seen tort on a Ric that looked right to me. I’ve seen some implementations that looked better than others, but still nothing that looks good to me. (There’s an interesting parallel with auto colors. Yellow ochre looks like baby **** on most cars (‘70s Datsuns come to mind) but looks absolutely stunning on a late-‘60s/early ‘70s Alfa Romeo GTV.)

This is the proper application of Tort.
Sorry for the Non-Rick content.

Yep. 3TSB is, IMO, the only finish to use tort on.
If it
has to be on a Rick, then MB would be the finish to go with, perhaps. But overall, Ricks and tort is just a bad idea, all around (again, IMO).

"Forgive me Father for I have sinned."
Yeah, yeah, yeah. What's her name?
Seriously, it depends on the shade of tort. Remember you can get tort in every variation from brown to red in traditional tort, depending on the maker and the production run. So you would have to match it up beforehand. How about an alternate to tort, like black, silver, or grey mother of pearl?

Honestly, I don't think it looks good on any instrument. Looks like bloody vomit to me. And yes, I have vomited blood before. Looked a lot like a tort pickguard.

That MOP looks nice, I've a Black V63 that would possible look really good with a Mother of Pearl Pickguard; I wonder if PickGaurdian does one ??
Currently the V63 has a gold pickgaurd which I don't care (I got it that way), so, it's either back to the original White, or maybe Mother of Pearl .....

Jim,
here are the plethora of Pickguardian material options:
https://www.pickguardian.com/options/materials/
Actually I've been very tempted to try the Black and Silver paisley MOP.
Why not go over the top if you're going there anyway?

Thanks for the link, very very tempting, either the Abalone, or the Zebra Shell would look really great
