Yeah I think that's a very complimentary color.

Now this raises the question, does he sand the border back down to show the checkerboard better?
It would be sad to have the finish obscuring the magnificence of the chex.

That's looking great! So great, in fact, that this thread was what finally pushed me to make an account over here. Congratulations. Larry does very fine work. Loved the reset technique, I've always been curious about his method for that. To Dirk's question about revealing the binding, not to "steal any thunder" per se, but the proper technique used by the famous jazz guitar builders, among others (such as Ric themselves) is to use a rigid steel scraper blade about 1" wide by 1/8" thick by ~4" long sharpened to a burr to carefully scrape away the finish using a pinched hand and the thumbnail as a guide. There's a good clip of Tom Murphy demonstrating the technique on Youtube if i recall correctly.

Cool stuff!

Hi Dirk,
Good point, there's absolutely no way I'd undertake a refinish that would mean the Chequered Binding would be hidden, as you're about to see it'll be revealed in all it's Black and White splendor

Let the "Glo" commence ....
With the base coat now done, it's time to begin the next phase, which is go bring out the "Glo"

Larry and I spent several hours discussing this as well as multiple samples of the finish, this included a full (but thinner) mock up of the whole Headstock so we could figure out how to approach those lovely Ebony wings.
In this next sequence the deeper colour is applied over the edges to establish the "Glo"
Note the masking tape surrounding the Binding

Nicely faded, no Clown Glo here

The next phase will be adding a very fine Metal Flake over the whole body
Stay tuned .....

I could be wrong, but I don't think that "glo" refers to a burst paint job. Fireglo is a burst, but Jetglo and Mapleglo are not. I have long thought that glo refers to the high gloss finish.

My theory is that the original colors in the Rick lines were "Natural," "Black" (or maybe "Jet"), and the new color was a red sunburst that they named "Fireglow." Some marketing person decided to be clever and drop the w from Fireglow and renamed it "Fireglo." Cool! And we could go with "Jetglo" - and, wait . . . "naturalglo" doesn't sound right and maybe just a bit suggestive. How about "Mapleglo"? OK, what else you got? Let's see: a blue - how about "Azureglo"? And an all reddish "Burgundyglo" (there is some evidence that Burgundy with the "glo" was used at some point). Then there was a brown burst that we can call "Autumnglo" . . . and so forth.

My guess is that "glo" really wasn't describing the "gloss" so much as it was kind of a trademark name (registered or not). It was a '60s thing and was eventually not applied to new colors such as "Midnight Blue," "Turquoise," "White," "Red," and all the others (glossy or not) that followed.

When I was a kid on a boy scout trip I saw a Fireglo Rickenbacker in a shop in Jackson Hole that was almost that dark, and wanted a Rickenbacker from that day forward. Now I have two lol.

Looks beautiful so far, dude.

Just a quick update.
Progress continues, and I'll be posting more pictures shortly.

I'm about to move at the end of the week and won't have Internet for possibly as long as 4-6 weeks, I'll be back ASAP

Rgds to all
