@Dane:
A balance knob sounds very intriguing.
I think I might like that better than the selector.
Selector has been acting up a little, maybe it is time for a change.

Last Question:

So based on the pics above, can I replace the selector box switch with an open style switch like a 4003 has? Or one of those open short Switchcraft switches?

I installed the Jimmy Page Les Paul mod into my RIC 650F, which has two humbuckers.
The JPLP adds push/pull pots into the regular LP layout to give you:
the ability to split each HB into single coil, and
the ability to switch phase and series/parallel between either of the HB/SC.

The version I used also gives a 'broadbucker', a hum-cancelling mode when both SC are on & in parallel.
