Strings for 360 12 String?

Post by larsongs »

I did a Search but didn’t find a lot of info… I need to buy some new Strings…

What Brand & Gauge Strings do you use on your 360 12 Strings? Also, Rounds or Flats? Nickel or ? Hex Core or ?

Same question for your 360 6 Strings..

I play mostly British Invasion Period type Music.. Vox AC10 (Modded) & AC15 with Blue. Also Fender 65 PRRI, 65 DRRI & Twin…

Thanks

What year? Cleaner stuff or crunchier? What's your budget?

TI Flats are generally considered the best. I'm perfectly happy with the Curt Mangan Pick of the Ricks set you can get from ricstrings though.

I use the TI (Thomastic Infeld) Jazz Flats on my twelves. They are expensive, but easy on the guitar's necks and your fingers and last a very long time without much change in their tone. The primary strings actually have a rather dull sound, right from the get go, but it tends to bring out the sound of the octave strings - which is kind of what we have twelve string guitars for in the first place. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but one good option. There are some sound samples in this mp3 file. These were cut in my office, running the guitar through a Janglebox compressor, then into my big tube Traynor bass head and directly into my Korg recording deck. No speakers involved.

Teb, those 12-string tracks sound lovely, indeed!

It’s a 2001 model.. I bought from North Coast Music.. I’ve been using Rickenbacker & Pyramid Strings over the years.. I play mostly British Invasion style Music… I use a Modded Vox AC10, Vox AC15 with Alnico Blue & Fender 65 PRRI, 65 DRRI or a Twin… Usually with a Byrds Janglebox…

I much prefer lowly simple Ernie Ball 12-string roundwound strings. They are low tension, play and sound great, and easy to replace if any of them break.

I'm not a fan of TI Flats (or any other flats). To my ears, they don't sound as good, and cost $32/set or something like that. And you can't buy them at your local music shop.

YMMV

If flatwounds (which I use): the Thomastik set, as seen at RicStrings.com.
If roundwounds, the stock Rickenbacker 95404 set.

The trick is a .010 for the 8ve G, and a wound string for the fundamental G.

Again, your mileage may vary.

I've not been able to get RIC strings her in OZ for a number of years. On my 620/12 I've been using D'Addario EXL150's, nickel wound round wounds. For me they've been good - and easily available. I'd describe them as bright and springy with a good balance. For my use they last a year - as I change them on annual clean and service.

Cheers,
Andrew

I like EXL150s, as long as I change out the high G for a .010, and, ideally, the root G and 8ve A for wound strings.

Just remember that whatever set you finally get, if your guitar has the 6-saddle bridge, get a set with a wound 3rd G unison string so that it will intonate correctly with the octave G string.

I had a set on the still-AWOL 660/12TP JG and although they felt good initially, they eventually felt really really tight and the guitar was not a joy to play because of it. I thought I might try a set again on another 12-string, but with half-step lower tuning to lower the initial (and hopefully later) tension.

Ironically, I have a 6-string Pyramid set on my 1998PT and they still sound/play great. I usually use D'Addarios on the 6ers, often the flat wound 11 set, as I like the feel and sound of them.

Keep in mind it's a personal choice, and what feels and sounds good to you is what matters. You might have to try a number of brands before you find the "best" for you. 8)
