No, not essential. It simply insulates the wire from accidental contact with some other non-insulated wire that would result in a short if contacted. If it's just a very short section, say a quarter inch or less, it likely won't be a problem. The heat shrink tubing typically goes onto the wire before it's soldered to the switch, pot, etc., then slid down and shrunk with heat after the end of the wire is soldered in place. Unless you're planning to de-solder that connection, I'd just wrap the end with a piece of electrical tape if you want to be especially safe.

Thanks for that, that’s very much appreciated.

If I was going to get some and do a proper job, what’s the best way to shrink the tube? I don’t have any sort of heat gun. Would a hairdryer be sufficient or would it take more than that?

I’d take it in and get it done by a pro but I have an operation this week and am going to be out of action for a few weeks, although if it comes to it that’s the route I’ll take.
