4001 v63: Neck Lift Question

Post by bylar13 »

Hello all. This is my first post.

I recently received a 1996, v63 and it was confirmed by Larry Davis that the bass is suffering from neck lift. Larry has been a great resource and has offered to do the repair.

The only trouble is that he his booked solid with other work, until late 2023. He is looking at referring me to another luthier for the repair and I thought I would ask here as well.

Has anyone had the neck repair done that they might recommend?

Thanks!

The route behind the neck pick up in this model is larger than needed and closer to the end of the neck, than on current Ric basses. As such there is very little material there to provide support against the string tension. This was an issue in older Ric basses prior to the moving of the neck pickup back about an inch.

Over time, the string tension actualy bends the neck out of position, making the neck angle incorrect in realtion to the bridge. Action, particularlly at the higher frets becomes problematic.

There is a fix and Larry Davis is the expert who corrects it. I am just not sure about waiting so long as I do not have an emotional attachment to this bass. I am also now wondering what the value is currently as is or parted out....bums me out.

Welcome Brian.

IMO, you should get it fixed, even if you decide later to sell it.

Has Larry floated any other names? I happen to know a guy.

Larry made an inquiry with a friend of his in my area (Philadelphia) but his friend didn’t feel it was something that he could take on.

I would love to have it fixed but time (relatively) is an issue as it needs to be playable. Now that things have opened up again I need it for gigs. I only have one other bass at the moment.

I would be happy for a referral and a conversation.

Thanks
