Buy 4003 or 4003s and say why

Post by lumgimfong »

Would you buy a 4003 or 4003s? Why?

Either one works for me.

As to why, that comes down to individual instrument and needs; mine are not yours.

Hope this helps.

"S"

I'm not a big fan of binding, other than to look at.
The "S's" are much more comfortable to me.

I personally prefer the unbound model, dot inlays, so I'd vote for 4003s but I own both....

Inlays and binding look much better.

Or you could wimp out and go for comfort.

Well, here's what I would do if:

1. I was buying a new Rick
2. I was still playing
3. I was still collecting Ricks that I wasn't playing. :(

I would buy the full-trim, checker-bound, shedua strip "Monteglo" or whatever they're calling it with the chechen fingerboard, full-width inlays, and V2 tailpiece.

OR

If I wanted the W "Walnut" version with the maple fingerboard, I would get the 4003SW. I think the black dots on the maple fingerboard look better than the "light on light" inlays of the 4003W. :D

I bought a 2015 4003S FG because it was an affordable way to get pretty close to Mike Rutherford's 1999 from the early days of Genesis. Mods: 1/2" spacing, toaster, RI horseshoe, knobs (2 removed, 2 chicken head), plexi TRC, vintage style strap buttons, gap tooth RI tailpiece, tugbar, flatwounds.

I bought one of the 2020 4003 CMB's (aka CB SPC MB) because it's super awesome. Really enjoying the tones it gets with that unusual pickup placement.

Jason, I know now that I don't get over here often enough! But what exactly is a 2020 4003 CMB's (aka CB SPC MB)? I don't want to hijack the thread but I'm always innarested in pictures of any Rick! You could PM me if you prefer.

Thanks!

Yep, that's it. Basically the Al Cisneros with a Monty Brown gloss finish and checkered binding on a maple body. Sort of Jazz Bass-y. Used it here if you want to hear it:

That is very nice! I've always liked Montezuma Brown, especially when it looks a lot like autumnglo!

Those sorts of decision tend to be made on a case by case scenario. Rickenbacker basses are fine looking in either form and you just never know what's going to speak to when you pick one up and play it.
