I live in the area as well and got the opportunity to play their 4005XC that's on display. Beautiful instrument indeed however it felt a little too fragile for me. They also have a used 1977 4001 that someone installed a fender neck pickup on. Played that one too and noticed the bridge pickup didn't work. When I returned they replaced the bridge PU with a SD. Guess it wasn't work sticking a factory pickup in it. But that 4005 did sound awesome though.

Did you notice if they had any 4004 there?

What's the balance like? Neck-heavy at all? (Says he, like he's got the readies to buy one... )

I love mine. I’ve punished it for a year and there is nothing fragile about it. Holds tune and you can bend. I kept the original wound strings. I did lower the upper guard and now it slaps great but I still need to find nice short screws. I added a straplock. Take full advantage of the Rick O sound or you miss half of the fun. Stereo Y cable, done.

It does have a bit of slink to the horizontal but with a decent strap it stays put. I however, have a stupidly slippery one because it had checkerboard. I do a lot of playing with just my left hand and I’m not fighting neck dive. Smaller tuners and the 300 series headstock might eliminate any that’s there. I’m short and wear it low just like a guitar so the balance works great for me. Don’t care, sounds amazing.

I wish I had better recordings, but they’re mostly with a cell. I ordered a recording computer early February…after a 6 month headache I’m now looking at non Apple options. Two direct outs to the PA and the treble can split to a guitar amp. I don’t want a bass amp, just into computer while recording everything raw and and out to PA. Huge sound.

None of that matters because it made 30 years of me being a guitarist go bye bye. Another nod to bye-bye is I can finally say I named mine “Severance”

Is it supposed to be strung with ball ends outside or on inside of tailpiece?

Mine came from the factory with the ball ends on the outside of the tailpiece.

When I got mine last year, first thing I did was put flats on it. I seem to remember trying it the other way and it not working, although I'm fuzzy on the details. So I'd say try it if you want but be ready to put it back the way it was.

Did you have to file the nut to get the flats to fit?

All depends on what gauge you use. I didn't need to do any filing.
