It’s 2022. Which flatwounds are you using?

Post by lumgimfong »

I like Ernie Ball Cobalts best but I need to go to a higher gauge set since my bass seems to structurally not like the low tension of the 40-95 set.

I wish there was a flat set with the low E kick of Rotosound stainless roundwounds.

Chromes on my V63 and Fender flats on my P-bass. No old Ricks in the stable now, so no TI flats being used at the moment.

TI JFs because they feel and sound amazing. I have a set on the fretless Elfin 5, too.

OPTIMA RB Flatwounds- just installed them a few days ago along with the 4003V2 tailpiece.
Because I told you before- oh, you can't do that.

Ernie Ball 2808 Group IV 40-60-70-95. Best flatwounds I know, in both feel and tone. And inexpensive at $35 - less than half of $76 TI Jazz Flats JF344.

Pyramid Golds, first place, Ernie Ball cobalts, a distant second, TI flats are about 6th or 7th place

Love the Optima 4099 set. I’ve had the same set on my 81 4001 for about 10 years.
Love the feel and the vintage thump.

On my 4002 I have planned to try the Optima RB. They do sound great on another 32-inch scale bass I have which I have an extender to use standard scale strings. In addition to my 4002, I have a couple more 32-inch scale basses: one has one of the last NOS set of LaBella 760FL-M sets before they were discontinued. Another has rounds. I have two sets of Fender 9050CL 45-60-80-105 (now discontinued) that I keep in reserve, even though slightly used.

Right now, D'Addario Chromes on my 4001V63, 4001FL, and one of my 4004Cii's. My Precision has Fender flats.

Still using the TIs. They seem to last forever.

Besides the string I mentioned in my previous post, I did have a set of La Bella Low Tension Flats on my 4001S when I was in a British Invasion tribute band. Nothing better than those for old school thump. I wouldn't say the tension was all that low. Just a little less tension than most sets of flatwound strings and not like T.I.'s. I think T.I.'s sound great, but are too loose for my feel.
