How to polish a pick guard edge?

Post by lumgimfong »

Hello,
Someone on here was talking about polishing their pick guard edge and I cannot remember how they did it.
Anyone know how? Graduated sanding with finer paper?
Polishing compound for plastics or like Maas metal polish?
I have an after market guard with a rounded edge I want to put back on my bass and the top of the guard is like a mirror but the edges are dull.
Thanks for the info.

I wet-sand the edges over the sink, starting with about 320 grit and working my way up through the grits - 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and then polish them with a rag and polishing compound. This is with the typical black wet or dry sandpaper that you can find at hardware or automotive stores. If you plan to do a lot of them it is worth investing in micromesh instead, which will last a long time and will go all the way up to 12,000 grit. I use the 5" disks (by hand) as they give you more for your money than the small square micromesh sheets.

On back-painted guards you get some cool lens effects at the edges. On solid white guards you just can get a nice clean edge. It works nicely on TRCs as well.
