4003 harness question

Post by lumgimfong »

I just reinstalled my original 4003 harness to see what it would sound like and to have the push pull vintage/regular feature. I have toasters in it now. So wanted to see what it would sound like with the original harness.

Been a while since I had two jacks to use, so dumb questions:

When only using a single 1/4 inch jack:
1. Normally, should be jacked into the mono jack, where both pups work.
2. The Ricosound jack will cut out the neck pup when toggle is in neck pup position and middle position. But bridge pup still works in middle and bridge toggle positions.

Just want to make sure everything was working right. Thanks.

Sound like you're in business.
The vintage/regular pull is a pretty cool option to have.

Of course the ultimate test is to get a stereo cable/split and send each pickup to different paths/destinations.

Thanks! Glad I got it wired up right. Tone is terrific!

Only issue of note I am having is this:

Background:
When hands are touching strings there is no noise/interference, just signal, which is great.
When hands are not touching strings I hear some interference. This is what normally happens on all my basses and I am good with that.

BUT: when I turn the volume off, I cannot hear the played signal (normal) but I can still hear background buzzing/interference. Why isn't this noise also being silenced by the volume being tuned off? It is this way for both pups.

All the grounds seem intact and I have continuity all over the place. So I don't get it.

My guess is it's perhaps your amp and or environment, not necessarily the bass itself?

All my other basses don’t do it. So that’s why I was thinking it was just this bass. And it did not do it with the old harness.

Update:
Musta been something wasn't sitting right.
I took the pick guard off and jiggled all the wires to be sure the joints were strong (everything tight), then put it back together and now it is way noiseless except it buzzes at about 3 ft off the floor, like in the zone when its hanging on the strap.
If I raise or lower the bass couple inches either way, the noise goes away.
If I rotate the bass, like turning my direction, it doesn't make a diff.
If I remember right, part of the reason I switched to a different harness a few years ago was because of the strange noise phenomena going on I could never figure out.
Might go back to the old harness if I can't figure it out.

That's very curious, chasing electronic problems can be a pain in the Bass!
Still sounds like an environmental issue if you've seen this happen in the same space before.

At least you can go back, perhaps that's the best test and solution.

Old harness is back in. Its totally noiseless like it was before.
So I will keep the old harness in. Besides, I like the simpler v/t/toggle control setup better.
Praise the Lord it is back to sounding great again. Church rehearsal tomorrow night!!!
