Rickenbacker.com has been offline recently

Post by 4005player »

Hi All - Does anyone know what is going on with www.rickenbacker.com lately? The site keeps throwing this error -

HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden
The Web server is configured to not list the contents of this directory.

It does seem to be a web server misconfiguration issue on their end....

I first noticed there was an issue a few days ago. Here is a screen capture.

Still there. Over a week, now. Maybe the main site has been shut down as someone elsewhere noted that only the boutique can be accessed.

Interesting. I'm no network admin, and I don't know if their server is using Linux, but I've seen enough error messages on my Linux Mint system to know that an update/upgrade can break things by changing a file location or name.

The error message is from IIS which is Windows only.

What does that mean? I see that error message on Safari.

I am trying now with Firefox, but it can't find it at all.

It looks like the main page now goes into an infinite loop with nothing displayed.

Brett knows way more about this stuff than me, but what he means is the web server they're hosting the site on is a Windows based web server, not Linux as questioned above. You can access it (*edit: or fail to in this case) equally via Safari or other browser regardless. He's simply referring to how it's hosted.

Yes, exactly what Graham said.

The back-end that Rickenbacker are running is Windows running IIS 7.5. IIS 7.5 was released in 2009 and went End Of Support (EOS) in 2020. It is high risk for any organisation to operate a system that is no longer supported by the Vendor. It is significantly more risky to have that system connected to the Internet whilst it is no longer supported by the Vendor.

Looking at the error code, it looks like files that are critical to the operation of the site are missing. It's difficult to determine whether this is planned or unplanned.
