concern 2009 325c64 vs 325c58 incorrect specs

Post by kuusamon »

Hello again,
I have not posted for a long time.
I was offered a 325c64 JG (lennon model) from 2009
However when I look at the pictures, the Vib-rola, gold colored pickguard, 4 knobs+switch instead of 5 knobs and switch.
It looks like to me a 325c58 , the serial is 0926453 .

But.... If I search, I find that the 325c58 in jet glow were discontinued after 2003, after that only in maple available as in 2009.
So is it a 325c58 from 2009 modified and painted black by the buyer of is it 325c64 customized by the buyer to look like a Lennon model. The seller is confused and claiming he bought the guitar in 2010 by the dealer (Thomann).
The serial number does exist if I look in the rickenbacker serial checker, it just does not say for which model.
I will enclose a picture.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Ron

That looks like the more narrow headstock of the '64. Another difference, the '58 has a two inch deep body, one and a half for the '64. You can also ask about the weight, the '58 is five pounds while the '64 is seven pounds.

Either way it's still a good find, though it beats me why anyone would actually want the Kauffman on there!

Thank you very much for your reply.
Indeed, same concern, why would somebody downgrade a c64 tot a c58 and using a kauffmann, while John had it quickly replaced with a bigsby. Looks like to me, as you already mentioned about the body thickness and narrower headstock, it was not in production like this but a previous owner had modified it. In the receipt it said the c64 but could not find this modification as standard in the reck production line.
The owner wants 2700 for it, including an old beat up Fender deluxe amp.
I am considering it. But not sure yet.

Still on the main "Board index" page is a guy who has had his request/offer to buy Kauffmans up for a few months:

He could not only tell you why anyone would want one, but he may be a way (via sale) to recoup some of the expense of the guitar purchase.

Here's a nice discussion regarding these:

Thanks for all your help.
I did buy it. It came in a package deal with a Fender deluxe amp vintage modified tube amp. type pr 772
paid about 2300 for it together.
The guitar has a few dings/paint chips missing and the backside is not shining anymore from rubbing against clothes, like flat of faint.
I might either bring it to a local luthier to fix it up or I might attempt it myself.
I hope I made a good deal.
