Hi Folks,

I've got one of these on order and I was wondering what would be a good flatwound or tapewound string to install? In the past I've only used flats on a shortscale bass, and RIC strings on my 4003, but I'm thinking of going with flats or tapes.

I'm guessing it'll come with RICs standard string set 45-55-75-105.

I don't want to do too much to the nut to fit strings, although I may have to tweak the trussrod.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

I like the La Bella brass white tape wound strings, but it really depends on what you're planning to play that should determine your string choice.

I used the D'Addario ECB80 Chromes on my old 4005WB. The stock set works fine but I replaced the .060 D string with a .055 to produce a better balanced feel to the set.

I haven't used them on the 4005, but TI Jazz Flats should be great, too. I have used them on other Ricks over the years (a set is currently on my Snowglo 4004L).

No fiddling with the nut required for either of them.

Hi Folks,

I received my 4005V this afternoon, and it's lovely. After over 8,000 miles it was still in tune!

1st impressions; the fit & finish is perfect, the body is light (@8.8lbs) and resonant, slightly neck heavy (light body) but you don't notice it after a while, the timber looks lovely through the Fireglo (which is, in my Wife's words "Delicious"), the neck is thinner than my '02 4003, the fingerboard is dark & interesting, the mother of pearl inlays have a noticeable depth to them, and the new lacquer formula (to me, that is) feels smooth and comfortingly strong.

Runnning my fat fingers over it the action is low, but perfectly setup, with little fret noise until you dig for 'clank'. It's been a while since I played bass, so it took me a while to get my left/right coordination going. I got there in the end. Acoustically it rings out, and is surprisingly loud for the player. Plugged in the bass has a powerful sound, with the pickup definition quite pronounced. The mix knob really delivers tonal variations, courtesy of the pickup separation. I expected the bridge pickup to be weak, but it's stronger than I expected and delivers a good biting tone. I'll have to find my home-brew stereo box and try that out with it.

Congrats, Ratwax! It is nice to read of others who find the pickup spacing (and the sound produced from them) is not a detriment, as many have conjectured (without them ever having actually spent time with one ).

Lovely bass Ratwax! (All you need is a stereo to two mono jack lead. No boxes needed). Lets have your take on the split sound when you get around to it.
