I'm happy if they just keep making them. I'm overdue for a new one. Maybe something special, if the timing is right for me for a change.

Mapleglo 4003s new for 1800$US or less
4004 new for same
30.5” Shortscale of either new for same.
I got my 4003 for $1550 new in 2016.
Last year, my local dealer had a new 4003s for 1700 so I know it can be done.

Best talk to your local dealer about it, then. At least the 4003S.
Economists like inflation to hover at about 2%. You can look at it as things getting more expensive, or, as I do, that money is worth less and less. In my lifetime, things take about ten times as much to buy as they did. Or more. In terms of the number of hours of work required to earn the money, most things are a lot closer. Not everything goes at the same rate, of course. But, as an example, I remember gasoline being about 25 cents a gallon. Now, $3, so not so far off.
Anyway, all that "Back in my day" BS was mainly to say that the price of new Rics isn't likely to come down.

That’s an interesting point.

Since I already have a 4001 and a 4003S, I probably won't be getting another until I can afford to get a 4005V or possibly another more unusual model. Like an 8-string or a fretless.

That's reasonable. OTOH, I have ten. Unusual models include a 3001, a 4003AC and a 4005XC. Also a 4004Cii. Of the more conventional ones, some have after-market pickups, giving them a different sound, and the stock 4001 and 4003W were built 40 years apart, so their high gains don't sound the same, either.
