Wiring help: 1957 Combo 450

Post by sangandongo »

Hi - I just plucked a '57 tulip. Wiring seems a bit off and I was hoping someone might be able to share pics, give me pot values, and validate what I've got under the hood of mine. 3-way selector works in reverse: position 1 is bridge, middle is both, position 3 is neck.

The neck is mega dark and the tone pot is wired poorly. There's nothing until I get to the very end going clockwise, where it will brighten up, then get real dark when I dime it. Either it's soldered wrong or the wiper is bad. TBD.

The guitar sounds good otherwise. Keeps up with my '57 prototype and '60. Here are some photos.

I've learned that this is the correct wiring, even though it's quite unconventional.

Forward position = bridge (normally that would be neck)
Middle position = both
Back position = neck with dark circuit engaged

The guitar sounds great, but it takes a little getting used to.
