Yes, sad but true, Im gonna be selling my 73' 4001..
Took both my ricks to a gig last night, used the old 4001 for one run through during soundcheck, then put it away prompty and got out my white 4003.
Never tried the 4001 on stage before - and now i know its not for me - i need the fat cutting 4003 sound.... i dont have a massive amp to deal with the 4001 properly. Also i have never really been able to get used to the neck shape, i dislike the very square bound edge and smaller than average frets. It basically does not feel right to me.
I will probably be selling it here in London,
But if anyone wants a vibey old toaster fitted 4001, with a worn out jetglo finish, make me a serious offer

You can take out the bass cut capaciter and put 4003 high gain pickups in a 4001 and then it will kick a$$ like the 4003 does ...
I like the modern Rics ... 1980 and later ... better pickups, better necks, better truss rods ...
The old ones have a cool vintage vibe though ...

Jeff - the cap is out, sure i can change the sound by swapping pickups,
But i dont like the way it feels - i like the modern necks

im gonna get a brand new jetglo 4003 to replace it, and buy one in the states ($2000 here new in london)

Those new 4004's are truely awesome instruments ... I love my 90 and 98 4003's

I have to agree with Owen, I have '01 4003, that from the moment you hang it around your neck, you wonder why you own other basses.

I don't know, I traded back my '01 4003 and am much happier with my '74, CS or '86 Shadow.

Let me clarify that last statement. I didnt mean that I dont care for my other Ricks,. I wouldnt give them up for anything, but there's just something about this fireglow 4003 thats very special. I'm sure you guys have a standout Rick that seems head and shoulders above all others.??

I agree that you should seriously consider a 4004 as you already have a 4003.

Try a late 70's 4001 Owen, they are like a cross between a new one and the early ones, great necks, round like the early 90's 4003's and the pickups are fatter sounding too. there is a big diffence between an early 70's and a late 70's 4001, the late ones are much easier to play on a modern stage with a band. A big amp would certainly help though.
Of course the new 4003's are great basses though.

Im definately set on a brand new 4003 in either jetglo or fireglo. A brand new RIC is something ill never get my hands on here (big big money) So im looking to but new in the states, ship it to friends in PA, and get them to bring it over later in the year. As id be buying unseen, and because they are so cheap compared to here in the UK - ill get a new one.
Bob - thats the problem , its a cool bass - but as a "tool of my trade" its not good enough on the stage
